May Athlete of the Month: Kai Lovell
Congrats to our May Athlete of the Month, Kai Lovell! You know that girl who’s always dancing around, screaming high pitch yells of joy and sometimes fear, and the girl who is saying “YES YOU CAN!”? Well, that would be our very own Kai Lovell. Kai (aka Permz from her Roller Derby days) is as sweet and spunky as they come. Kai has come a long way from being afraid of the barbell and saying a lot of “I can’t’s” to signing up for The Coconut Cup Competition! Learn more about Kai below and make sure to commend her for all her hard work!
How I was introduced to CrossFit: I was introduced to Crossfit by my wonderful husband who kept bugging me to go for years to go. All that time I thought that Crossfit wasn’t for me, I didn’t want to lift weights or do crazy handstands and wall ball exercises. Lol, and how wrong I was, I’m so happy that he kept encouraging me to go, because now I love it so much I can’t imagine life without it!
If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be stoked: Pull ups. Every kind, Kipping, strict, ascending, and on and on and on. Ugh. They are all my arch nemesis.
If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be: That’s a hard one for me because I believe I suffer from Crossfit movement amnesia. I think my experience has taught me that I like emom’s because then you can “theoretically” take a little break in between. Yay breaks!
Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) Hmmmmmm about me… Sometimes I feel like the luckiest girl in the world, I’m married to my bestie Bronson and we have two great kids that come to Crossfit with us, Makoa and Nai’a and we live in Anahola with our three classic pure bread poi dogs, Bebe Lovell, Collar Lovell and Big Boy Lovell, they are a big part of our Ohana. I’m in the timeshare industry, which is super fun, because I get to talk to people about their vacations and how much they love Kaua’i which are both subjects I’m a big fan of. When it comes to hobbies, the one that stands out the most is Skating. My heart belongs to roller derby, but my knees, and hips and shoulders object at this point. I would’ve never guessed that some of the most fun I’d ever have in my adult would happen in my 30’s when a bunch of us started the Garden Island Renegade Rollerz roller derby team. What can I say other then skating around in a pack full of hardcore chicks going left while blocking and cleaning each other out is super fun! Seriously!
My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related): In Crossfit, the fact that I can put my nose to the wall in a handstand is crazy, considering 6 weeks ago I couldn’t get my body anywhere near the wall. There’s something to be said about repetition. Mind blown. And in life being a mom. What a blessing:)
My favorite cheat meal/food is: Inn and Out Burger! It is both a blessing and a curse that it’s so far away.
What is your favorite song to workout to (or in your case – dance to)? Anything that pumps you up, Beyoncé booty music, Journey, the Beastie Boys, M.I.A, 70’s, whatever, just nooooooo slow music. Boo. Slow music.
What I love about CFK is: My daughter said to me a few months back that Crossfit Kapaa is part of our family. That is what I love the most about it. It’s such a positive, encouraging, fun place to be apart of. Together we support each other to push harder, we celebrate each other’s victories and even better then that are having a great time while sweating out all of the demons! Lol!
Something you might not know about me is: That I’m pretty darn seaworthy. When I was 3 years old myself and my family picked up our boat in Finland with the end result of sailing as a family to Tahiti in 18 months. Pretty crazy idea. It would turn out that the trip would span 18 years and we would find that we were chronic meanderer’s, incapable of sticking to a schedule. I spent many years of my life at sea, homeschooling and traveling around like a pirate. Even though our house was always here on Kauai we were all over the place. It was both a fun and scary adventure at times, that taught me a lot about this great big world, but if I never do another ocean crossing it will be too soon. Ya know what I mean?!! xo
Yoga at CFK starts this week!
Were excited to announce the start of yoga classes again at CFK! Classes will be held every Thursday at 7-8am and Sunday 9:30-10:45am. Personally, Kundalini Yoga (the basis of this class) has changed my life. There is really science behind this type of yoga that includes certain postures mixed with hand gestures and chanting to stimulate certain parts of your brain as well as your glands. With them, you can do anything from induce creativity, reduce stress and anxiety, promote self love and more. I know from experience this type of yoga will help you in so many ways. It’s perfect for CrossFitters since it is tons of stretching mixed with just pure relaxation! Plus it’s free to all members! So check it out, why not?!
